our trip to NYC

February 14th, 2009 — 5:15pm

I’ve uploaded all the photos from our trip to NYC. Click the photo below to see the whole set. (The leis are an inside joke to our friends A & R.)

New York was wonderful, but I feel like it’s such a lonely city. During the week especially, it seemed like people were always alone. The other thing that I was really interested to see was New York Fashion. For women it was: tall boots, knee length wool peacoat, large leather bag, slouchy hat, a scarf folded in half and looped through, and an ipod. Almost everyone was dressed in black or grey. The men were also dressed in dark colors, with a lot of them wearing dress shoes, slim fitting trousers or jeans, a wool coat with a scarf, messenger bag and an ipod.

I loved the middle of the city, but my most favorite parts were lower manhattan, like soho, the meatpacking district and chelsea. On Saturday we went to Chelsea market and I freaked out. It was by far my most favorite place. There we picked up some bread, smoked salmon, roasted nuts and wine for our picnic in Central Park the next day. I was so jealous of the variety of produce, fresh fish, artisan breads… it was amazing.

We also got to spend a good amount of time at Purl and Purl Patchwork. I was surprised at how itty bitty the stores were, but they were amazing. I got a few good ideas at Tangle, but being there also confirmed how well we are doing. It made me feel really proud of Tangle.

I’m happy to be home, but I came away with a love of the city. At some point in my life, I would like to live a year or two there.

the space between Colorado and Utah

August 1st, 2007 — 12:38pm

Sunday (after I had completely torn apart my bedroom, ripped out the carpet and painted the walls and floors – pics to come) Jim got a wild hair and decided that we needed to drive out to the Utah border to look at an obelisk stuck in the middle of the desert. This mythical obelisk turned out to be nothing but the marker on the old highway for the state line. We did take some nice photos though and we did get to witness the sun setting on our way there and the moon rising on the way home.

As much as I hate the summer days here, the summer nights are spectacular. There is something about experiencing the beauty of the earth that makes me feel connected to God.

orga(sm)nic

June 27th, 2007 — 3:36pm

We got home yesterday from a trip over the mountains to visit Jim’s middle sister. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a good visit with her and we really enjoyed ourselves. She recently moved into a cute little town house, with a public pool across the street and a starbucks around the corner. (Let’s just say that the number of trips we made to said starbucks in the span of two days is so embarrassing that I refuse to post it.)

As we all know (probably more than we want to at this point!), I’ve been on my quest to find Sigg water bottles for the whole family (of course not finding the kid sizes here) and that brought us to Whole Foods. I’ve been told of the miracle that is Whole Foods, but being that good shopping refuses to come to this side of Colorado, I’ve never been. Until Monday, that is. Do you think I could just move in? I seriously told Jim that we should consider moving just to get to shop there.

The produce was the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, the meat! and the seafood! The rows and rows of Silk Milk for only $1.99! the bulk section! and the deli! I’m pretty sure I was having an orgasm. The trash bins are separated for recycling, the coffee was freshly roasted, they hesitated to hand out plastic bags…. I was trying to figure out how to do all the grocery shopping for the week and get it back home unspoiled.

On our way out of town, we stopped again to stock up on snacks and make our Sigg investments (holy crap those bottles are expensive!). We had yummy eggs and potatoes and breakfast burritos from the deli, and freshly roasted coffee from the coffee bar. Just seeing all those rows and rows of organic food made me giddy. I’m going to start preparing my plea to Whole Foods to come to our town…. right now I think.

(We’ll talk about what happened in the parking lot next time…)

the visit

November 3rd, 2006 — 10:45am

So Joelene posted some photos from her trip out to visit me!! We had such a great time. I’m constantly amazed at the quality of friendships I’ve made online. I’m very lucky.

Activities of most note from her visit would be when I hit a deer on the Interstate going 75 miles an hour. Wow, that wasn’t fun. The deer had been hit by another car and was laying in the road. When I moved to the other lane to avoid hitting it, it got up and basically ran into my car. Luckily for me (not the deer), we didn’t hit it head on. The only damage to my car was to the side mirror, which is now totally missing. ooops.

But we did fun things too, we went to Glenwood Springs (I know, I was just there) to swim in the hot springs, ate lots of sushi, shopped down town GJ and found a cute new children’s boutique (see Honor’s new hat below.) And we spent some time at Tangle on Saturday; there was a huge group of people hanging out knitting – it was such a riot. See Joelene’s pictures of the store here.

It was a much needed, very fun weekend.

(And to answer the question why we don’t celebrate Halloween: We’re just not comfortable with the holiday’s pagan roots.)

Sunday Jim and I headed to Glenwood Springs to celebrate our seventh wedding anniversary. Glenwood is a lovely town, just off I-70, about an hour from Aspen. We walked around town scouting out the yarn store, soaked in the hot springs, rode a gondola up to the top of the mountains, ate some yummy food and enjoyed the offerings of the local brewery. Amidst all this, we dealt with a minor family emergency.

It never ceases to amaze me how we give our family the power to rip out our hearts and stomp them to pieces. I’m pretty jaded right now, and I don’t really know what to say or how much I should say. So, I guess I’ll just say, despite it all, I had a really great time with my husband and I am so thankful that he is my stability.

mountains

September 6th, 2006 — 9:37am

Last Saturday we headed up to the mountains for a picnic. It was so perfect up there, the mosquitos have already died off, but the weather is still beautiful. There were a few spots on the aspen trees where the leaves were starting to turn gold. I have to say, this is my absolute most favorite time of year.

We took the dog with us which is always… interesting. He has gotten to be a BIG beagle – at least 40 pounds at 9 months old and he’s not quite done growing. This big beagle likes to sit in my lap while we are in the car which doesn’t really work for me because, 1. I like to feel my legs and 2. I must knit while in the car. Sorry puppy. We got him a new leash attachment that goes over his nose and turns him into a good dog, it’s amazing! And it really makes for a much more relaxed family outing.

While were were up in the mountains, we took the opportunity to take some amazing photos of the kids. I love my camera! I’ll probably be pestering you with photos of the kids over the next several days, they were all so good! But here’s a few to start.

The kids thought the best part of the whole zoo was being able to pet the goat and the turtle. That and the gift shop.

apples and yarn

June 19th, 2006 — 9:21am

Well, the trip was a success. We were SO busy! It seems like we were gone two weeks, not two days. I’ll have lots of pictures in the next few days, but first the most important.

Us at the Apple store. Photo taken on a Macbook pro with photobooth.

And my yarn scores.

yarn scores from Denver

See that, right there on the left? That’s Koigu, the best sock yarn EVAR!!! I think the store owner laughed at me when I saw it, because I let out a little squeak. On the right of that is Louet gems sock yarn and on the far right is Rowan Linen print and felted tweed. I needed one more ball of the linen print for a shawl I want to make, and the felted tweed is just backup incase I run out.

I also bought a book I’ve been wanting, Knitting For Two. It is the book that has this extremely cute baby sweater in it that I must knit, like, yesterday.

There’s some pretty exciting things going on around here, so my brain is a little scattered. I hope to be able to let you all in on it soon, but in the meantime, I’ll leave you in great SUSPENSE!

I’m so mean.

My trip to California

February 21st, 2006 — 11:46am

My trip began with a rocky start. The plane was really late arriving here to take me to Phoenix, so I was going to miss the last flight to Santa Barbara. After numerous phone calls to Joelene and intense scrutiny of the map of California, it was decided that I would fly from Phoenix to L.A. Joelene drove 3 hours to pick me up in L.A. and then another 3 hours back home. She’s sweet to me, what can I say?

We arrived at Joelenes house around 2:30am, slept for 4 hours and then jumped back in the car to head to Santa Clara for Stitches West. Being in Silicon Valley was interesting. There wasn’t a gas station, grocery store or hardly a restaurant to be found, but there was Yahoo. One thing I know is that all the techie types like a nice hotel! Even it the gift shop was a vending machine full of condoms and ipods.

Our SEVENTY DOLLAR class was really disappointing. I felt like we learned only an hours worth of learning (if that) in a 3 hour class. Basically we learned the double start cast on and how to strand yarn in front of your work. I’ve decided that the double start cast on will hereby be called the 70 dollar cast on.

The Stitches Marketplace was really amazing and at it Joelene and I realized that we were the youngest people there. We also saw some really interesting knitted pieces that led us to our new knitting motto, “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.” I sort of had a hard time buying yarn. Which I know is hard to believe. I think I overanalyzed my purchases. I did get yarn for a few projects and I also got a really nice knitting purse.

After having lunch with a couple more internet friends, we left Friday afternoon to head back to Joelenes. The car was packed full of sock yarn (and hardly any of it was mine!) and we were really tired. We spent the next day checking out the central coast, eating yummy food and knitting. And then I flew home.

I think Jim was more happy to see me than the kids. That’s ok, cause they made me this really great card. It was a great trip, but it’s good to be home.

I’m back

February 20th, 2006 — 10:59am

I had a really great trip! But the minute I stepped off the plane, I got slammed with a nasty cold. I’ll have a lot more to say tomorrow, but in the meantime, here are a few photos that Joelene took.

Pismo Beach

Vending machine in the Hotel (Notice the condoms next to the ipods, on the other side there was candy and soda. It wouldn’t even take cash, CC only.)

(don’t for get the scarf squares if they haven’t been shipped yet)
