Grandma's Sugar Cookies


1 cup butter
1 cup shortening
1 cup sugar
1 cup powdered sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 tps vanilla
4 cups flour, plus more as needed and for rolling
1 tps soda
1 tsp cream of tartar

1. Preheat oven to 400. Cream butter, shortening and sugars. Add eggs and vanilla and beat until fluffy.
2. Combine dry ingredients. Gradually mix into butter mixture. Add flour as needed to make a dough firm enough to roll out.
3. Roll out dough and cut into desired shape. May top with M&M's and sprinkle with sugar or top with icing after baked.
4. Bake for 6 to 7 minutes. Cool on paper towel lined cooling racks.
