Melengar

Last night we went to my sisters house to visit her new pet. An Iguana named Melengar. He’s a rather massive lizard, about 3 feet long. I wish I would have brought my camera with me….

He’s got a blue head that fades into a brilliant green and then ends at his tail in brown. Eden was pretty scared of him and would only touch his tail, when we forced her to. But this morning, all she could talk about was “Ashweys Wizard”. She told me that she touched the “wizards” tail and that the “wizard woves me!”.

On a side note, yesterday Eden gathered up her purse full of toys, put her shoes on (nevermind pants!) and announced that she and bunny where going shopping at Old Navy. Makes me so proud!

I just wanted to let you know that you misspelled Melyngar. It’s a Welsh name from Lloyd Alexander’s Prydain series.
Now for a Welsh language lesson…
Most of the time “y” is pronounced as “u” as in fun. Sometimes it will pronounced as “i” as in “in”
“ll” almost sounds like “thl” but the “th” is very soft and comes from pressing the tip of your tongue to the back of your front teeth and gently blowing air out from the sides of your mouth.
    “f” is pronounced as “v”
    “w” is pronounced as “oo”
“dd” is pronounced as “th” as in leather (not as in smith)
“c” is always hard like cat never like circle
“g” is always hard like go never like gentle
    some examples…
Mynydd Ceiswyn is pronounced as Munuth Kice-ooin (a town in Wales).
Afon Dyfi is pronounced as Avon Duvvy (literaly- The River Dyfi)

Okay, enough! It’s just frustrating when so many people mis-pronounce Welsh words.

yes, Ash, but I didn’t mispronounce it, I just spelled it the way it was pronounced.

You’re too freakin smart for your own good!

oops! I lied. Mynydd Ceiswyn is not a town, it is a mountain. Well, it’s a hill to those of us who have grown up around 14’rs. Mynydd Ceiswyn is 605m (1985ft) in elevation.
